Linda Stemp reports a male red-bellied woodpecker on and before December 29 at their feeder on Bright Lake, just west of Iron Bridge. They also have a northern shrike hanging around, looking for easy prey.

Although they are common, they are the first ones I have seen this year: on 01 April about 11 AM there were 4 Robins (probably males judging by bright colouring) in the Sumac shrub in my backyard, eating some of the berries and quarreling with each other. At the same time, a single Grackle flew into a nearby tree. Really, the item of note is that there is still 3' of snow in my back yard.
Ken McIlwrick may have passed this on already, but last week there were a Merlin (that caught a Common Redpoll near my feeder), and a very pale-coloured Barred Owl in the back yard. My neighbour took some close-up photos of the owl, they've been sent to Ken.
Location: 111 Millcreek Drive near the north edge of the built-up portion of the city.
