2017 Bird Sightings

November 2, 2017. Gail Smith writes: I was given your email address as a contact to Sault Naturalists.  My husband and I live in Wawa.  Since Oct. 16, we have had an unusual bird at our feeder.  We eventually identified him/her as a Eurasian Tree Sparrow.  We thought your members might be interested to know this.  The attached photo was taken today by Carol Dersch.  If you have questions, please phone us at 705-856-7296

November 2, 2017. Carter Dorscht photographed this female Harlequin Duck in the St. Marys River, directly out from the MNRF District Office in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.  The bird was seen in American waters as well before it drifted into Canadian waters.  The bird was never relocated after the initial sighting.

October 25, 2017. Carter Dorscht and James Logan observed four Short-eared Owls on Lake George Road in Bar River, Ontario.  This sets a new high count for the Algoma District.  Some of these birds continued to be seen by other birders over the next few days.  Photo by Carter Dorscht.

June 26, 2017. Marty Frolick spotted an albino European Starling around 3 pm June 26 at 69 Southwood Drive in the Tarentorus subdivision in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It was foraging for grubs with a small flock of juvenile starlings on his front lawn.  It then flew to a nearby tree where he took the following picture.

May 23, 2017. Jim Hurvid reports a sighting of a Yellow-headed Blackbird at 7:30 pm May 23 on his bird feeder at 1034 Carpin Beach Road, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He says “It was feeding in an apple tree beside a cedar hedge, but clear backyard around it with scattered trees in close proximity to a farm field environment.”

April 21, 2017. John Brett reported a Yellow-headed Blackbird at the end of Calabogie Road in Laird Township, Ontario.  Carter Dorscht also observed the bird on the 21st and photographed it on the 25th.
