September 27, 2014, Fall Foray

Leaders: Jack and Gail Jones

This warm Indian summer day was a wonderful time to enjoy a walk on a shaded bush road on St. Joseph Island with members of the Sault Naturalists. With Jack shuttling the vehicle, Gail, Joy, Evelyn, Vivian and Viv's four grandchildren took our time ambling along with Dave, Christopher and Robert (with the help of his iPad) keeping us informed of the bird and plant life surrounding us. We saw a bald eagle, American Goldfinch and a possible Nashville Warbler as well as rudbeckia, asters, goldenrod, chicory and many more.

Along with great companionship, we bonused with 2 Eastern Red-Bellied snakes on the road (one dead and one alive) and a gracious invitation by the owners of the Harmony Tea House (Pam and Harold Cooper) to tour the old school and share fresh made ginger cookies.

The kids were a delight, Emma in her wagon and Christopher, Holly and even little Sam (age four- "my legs are little") going the distance.

With coffee at Mom's we recapped the day and shared many laughs. It couldn't have been a better day.

Here are our observations for today:

Nashville warbler(?), song sparrow, bald eagle, raven, crow, American goldfinch, eastern red bellied snake, yellow bellied sapsucker, sheep, white crowned sparrow, horses, turkeys, red squirrel, white tailed deer, Canada thistle, chipmunk, wild carrot, ringbilled gulls, aster, turkey vultures, rudbeckia, sandhill cranes, habanera, chicory, goldenrod, blue flag, common burdock, buttercup, chokecherry, milkweed, sneezeweed, St. Johnswort, sow thistle, Clitocybe decora
